In order to generate more complicated shapes such as part spherical forms we utilise 3D machining programs These are usually remote systems that generate the machine tool code which is then transferred to the machine to execute the program. The limitation of this is that the cutting tool remains rigidly vertical so it is not always perpendicular to the surface being cut.
The most modern CNC milling machines are 5 axis which move in a linear fashion around the three main axis but also have the capability of rotational movement in the same three axis at the same time. The great advantage of this system is that the cutting tool does remain perpendicular to the cut surface thus increasing accuracy & efficiency.
Some 5 axis machines achieve this in a rather compromised fashion whereas our machines achieve a completely smooth movement, this is known as Simultaneous 5 axis machining.
